To Juice or not to Juice….that is the Question

juice cleanse

We have been so fortunate to have Elizabeth Sills in our Annex serving up her yummy juices!  I was fortunate enough to try one the other day – a mixture of pineapple, carrot, something green, something red, and a few other fruits….ha – what can I say, it was a few days ago, and while my memory is lacking about what was in it, I am still very clear about how delicious it was.

Elizabeth doesn’t just focus on juicing – she practices a holistic approach to health and wellness, which means that she looks at how all areas of your life are connected. She doesn’t dwell on calories, carbs, fats, or proteins – or create lists of restrictions, or good and bad foods. You can read more about Elizabeth here.

But juicing IS very much in the spotlight these days – I’m sure you’ve heard of it. It’s in tons of magazines hyped up as the miracle secret to every celebrity body. If you google it, you can have it delivered right to your door by any one of a number of companies from all over the nation. I’ve even considered trying it, although the closest I’ve come is a smoothie/raw foods ‘cleanse’ because I still need something to bite into at the end of the day!

With all of the incredible press, we would be crazy to think it’s not the smart & healthy thing to do! But what is the point of juicing, really? To lose weight? According to some, yes.  Get clearer skin? Well, yes, that too.  Be healthier overall? Oh, yeah, don’t forget that one.

Juicing does give you a way to incorporate lots of fruits and vegetables into your diet that you might not normally get – and that you might hate if you were to eat on their own.  And it does give you a fresh, detoxified feeling. But just because you’re reading about how great juicing is and how much Jane Celebrity loves it, does that mean it’s really the thing for you? Let’s take a look….

Juicing for WEIGHT LOSS

‘If I juice, I will lose all those pounds I need to!!’ Yes and No. Probably more No than Yes.  Juicing will help you lose weight initially because you’re drinking your calories instead of eating them whole, so the body processes them much more quickly and more efficiently since it dosen’t have to break down actual food. ( and, let’s face it, you’re probably taking in a lot fewer calories ) However, once you go back to eating regular foods, that weight you lost will come right back. This is because you’re not permanently changing your eating habits, you are temporarily changing them, so the body gets confused once it has to start breaking foods down again. And let’s be honest, you can’t juice forever.

But, if you look at your cleanse as the start of your new ‘healthy habit eating regimen’ you can keep the weight off for good. We all know what that means – watching what we eat, and exercising, yadda, yadda, yadda; it’s up to you to continue to eat healthy and to stay on top of your workouts to keep the weight off.

Bottom Line: Think of juicing as a starting point to getting on a healthy track verses a quick body fix.

Juicing to get CLEARER SKIN

You know the saying:  ‘you are what you eat.’ If you eat crap, you’re going to look like it – and that’s both gross and unattractive to all parties. So instead, eat cleaner foods for a clearer face. It’s that simple. Juices are FULL of vitamins and minerals that we need to keep our skin looking and feeling amazing, so when you start replacing that greasy cheeseburger with a juice full of green leafy vegetables or fresh squeezed fruit, you’re going to definitely notice differences in your complexion. Will juice work miracles and take ten years of wrinkles off your face? No. Will you notice healthier, clearer pores? Yeah, you betcha.

Bottom Line: Juicing helps hydrate your skin to show off its natural glow – hello sunshine!

We ask ourselves all the time, ‘What can I do to be healthier?’  The answer: one we sort of have a love/hate relationship with…. Eat more fruits & vegetables, drink more water, and exercise on a daily basis.  Juicing covers two of those (fruits & veggies and water)  As you go on whatever form of cleanse you decide, or happen to juice as a healthy way to supplement your meals, the benefits will be enormously huge no matter which way you look at it. I have heard stories about people fighting (and beating) diseases through juicing, finding a new love for their body and mind, and finally realizing how aware we must be of what we put in our mouths. How we eat directly affects the way we feel, look, and live.

Bottom Line: If we juice to be healthy, we are choosing a better way of life for the long-term.
